Long gone are the days of embroidery sampler books with tiny neat stitches in minute embroidery flosses. Today embroidery is vibrant, bold, illustrative or abstract. Everything goes!!! Fabric scraps, sequins, beads, painted or printed backgrounds, applique - designs can evolve, be planned, or are happy accidents that adorn cushions, tea-towels, book covers, mix media works of art, fashion, accessories or even ceramics. We do however, love the sampler, and creating small embroidery books of ideas can be rewarding, mindful and beautiful.
Make a small embroidery sampler, with the option of creating a beautiful sample book that you can continue to work on once you’ve left the workshop. Your embroider sampler can be themed - choose an artist to emulate, or work in a abstract way to create a sample that makes you just feel ‘good’. You could write a secret message to someone and present it as a gift, or create a loud and proud sample that can be added to a larger body of work or existing work of art.
Aim of Session
No experience necessary. You’ll go back to basics by picking up the humble needle and thread to express yourself. There will be less emphasis on perfection, but working intuitively you will create a texturally rich sample that uses a vast array of beads, sequins, threads and yarns to represent you or that special someone. Sewing will encourage you to slow down, relax and clear your mind from the daily routine.
We will begin by having a quick look at some samples, inspirational textiles artists and practising a few techniques. During this time you can be thinking about your own design however if you have trouble there will be templates to use. There'll be plenty of colours and plenty of inspiration, everything is provided for you. You will work on calico which you may well want to add garment films or vinyl too before embroidering. You may also like to add applique, and other materials to create your abstract or illustrative embroidery sampler.
This workshop is designed to help you slow-down, breathe, and create something for you or that special someone. You will work in a professional print and textile studio allowing you access to specialist equipment and learn techniques you may not have experienced or considered combing before. We love working in a spontaneous, and well resourced way that allows you to create something unique.
Materials will be provided. Sequins, embroidery flosses, fabrics, yarns, beads, calico, scissors, glue, needles, embroidery hoops. But of course feel free to bring any of your own tools or extra threads along on the day. Tools can also be purchased so if you don’t finish you can take it away to finish at home.
